How to rate the wind according to Beaufort's scale, from a gentle breeze to a hurricane-force gale.
- Sir Francis Beaufort devised a 13-point scale by which to measure wind speed.
- He did so by grading the effects of wind - at Beaufort Force 0, the sea is calm; at Beaufort Force 12, houses and buildings are destroyed.
- At Beaufort Force 2, breeze can be felt on the skin, at Beaufort Force 6, the sea is choppy and it is hard to use an umbrella!
- Recently, Beaufort's scale has been extended to Force 17 - for extremely violent storms.
